Dreaming about Falling into water

A fall that ends in water (ocean, lake, river) rather than on hard ground. The water changes the reading significantly because water carries its own symbolism around the unconscious and emotion.

Common interpretations

  • Jungian

Falling into water in the Jungian frame often combines two motifs: descent from the conscious position and immersion in the unconscious. The reading is typically less alarming than a fall onto hard ground. Water receives, dissolves, holds. The dream may be pointing toward emotional material the dreamer is being asked to enter rather than survive.

You fall from a bridge into a deep, dark river and find you can breathe. A common reading: emotional content the waking self has been avoiding is more inhabitable than the avoidance suggested.
